Tips to Staying Alert When Traveling Long Distances

When it comes to having an unconventional job such as truck driving, you’ll be faced with a unique set of challenges. One of these is battling fatigue when driving long distances. We all know that it’s easy to get distracted and tired when driving, especially during long trips and when traveling at night. Luckily, there are ways you can bypass this issue. Below are some tricks to combating fatigue, whether you’re on the job or planning the ultimate road trip.

Fuel with Power Foods

While maintaining a healthy diet on the road can be a challenge, eating nutritiously can help you go the distance and stay extra alert. While fast food tends to be more convenient and readily available, opt for salads and other healthier options when they’re available. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables as well as healthy proteins to keep your energy at its peak.

Stay Properly Hydrated  

In addition to eating power foods, be sure you’re staying hydrated — and we mean actually hydrated, as opposed to drinking too much soda, coffee, and energy drinks. Good old fashioned H2O has the ability to keep your body going and your natural energy levels up. Be sure you’re drinking enough water for your health and mental clarity on the road.

Get a Good Night’s Rest

You can’t fully control how good your night of sleep will be, but there are a few things you can do to start off on the right foot. In order to get a good night’s sleep, plan a sleep schedule and stick to it. Consistency can help a great deal when it comes to getting adequate rest. In addition to this, limit your screen time before bed, as blue light produces a large amount of energy and makes it more difficult for you to fall asleep.

In the event that too much light or noise impacts the quality of your sleep, try using a mask and earplugs to help. It could be a great yet small investment for when you are on the road.

Go to a Rest Stop When You Need It

It’s always a good idea to recharge. Luckily, there are a number of places for truck drivers to do so along the way. It’s recommended that drivers take a quick break from the road every two hours or so when traveling long distances. Hydrate, have an energizing snack, take a power nap, or recharge in whatever way works best for you.

Never Drive When You’re Too Tired

If you ever feel yourself becoming dangerously tired, take a break. Making sure you’re able to safely drive is more important than staying on the road when you’re too tired, which can pose a threat to yourself and others.
