3 Ways to Express Appreciation to Veterans This Holiday Season

There are so many ways that you can show your appreciation to veterans, especially during the holidays. This holiday season, try these three ways to show a veteran that you are grateful for their service.

Donate

There are a multitude of organizations that offer support, services, and and appreciation for our service members. The following are a few reputable organizations worth looking into:

  • Disabled American Veterans
  • Wounded Warrior Project
  • Homes for Our Troops
  • Don’t Forget About a Soldier’s Best Friend
  • The USO
  • Operation Write Home

These are just a select few of the charities around and they are focused on everything from assisting veterans to more specific organizations that are only focused on Special Forces soldiers. Donations allow you to contribute and give back to veterans.

Listen to Them

It seems like we all know someone who is an active military personnel or a veteran. One of the greatest things you can do to show that you care is to listen. Next time you see someone who has served, listen to their stories. It’s a simple gesture that can go a long way. Chances are it may mean the world to someone that you took the time to listen to their stories.

Volunteer at a VA Hospital

To really show your appreciation, spend a day with a veteran. Look up the closest VA hospital and find out what their rules and policies are for volunteering with patients. Once you gather up the essential information, dedicate an entire day to spending time with one veteran or a group of veterans. The facility may have events or meals that you could help with. This is especially important around the holidays since this can be a lonely time for those who don’t have many family members that visit. Just think of all the stories a veteran could entertain you with while you play a card game together. After all, time is the most precious gift you can give.
