Coping with Stressors While Working in the Truck Driving Industry

A truck driving job is definitely not for the faint of heart. This is especially true for those who struggle with stress. There are many factors that can make a truck driving job more stressful than most, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t healthy ways to cope with these feelings. Below are just a few of the ways you can choose to manage the pressure that comes along with the job.

Plan Your Days Ahead of Time

Having a day free of stress often begins with how things go from the moment you wake up. Being prepared for what’s ahead can often lead to a day that’s relaxed because you’re starting out on a good foot. If you plan your driving routes ahead of time, checking for traffic, construction, and other possible factors that could throw you for a loop, you’ll be more equipped to have a drive free of unexpected tension.

Keep Road Rage in Check

When you’re driving all of the time, you’re more likely to encounter the frustrating things that drivers do on a daily basis. Swerving, cutting in front of each other, not using their turn signals, and more could easily set anyone off with frustration and anger. Because you are required to be on the road for your job, you don’t want these little things making you made and ruining an otherwise smooth day. When you’re on the road, try your best to not sweat the small stuff — it’s not worth ruining a day of work over.

Exercise

After a long day, this may be the last thing you want to do, but some people swear by it. Exercising relieves stress and releases endorphins, happiness hormones that are known to relieve worry, reduce pain, and make you feel better overall. Exercise doesn’t have to be something you dread; try out a few different workouts that you’ll have fun doing while on the road. Below are a few suggestions:
• Running
• Yoga
• Weight training
• Biking
• And more. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

Meditate

While on the road, some people find it beneficial to practice meditation. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Meditating for just 5 minutes a day can have significant benefits on your physical health and mental well-being.

Pack Stress Reducing Equipment

When traveling, be sure to bring a stress ball along for relief. Not only is this one of the simplest ways to get rid of pent-up stress, these are easy to pack. In addition to this, they strengthen arm muscles and your grip, which is used when driving on a daily basis.

Talk to a Loved One

The people you love are just a phone call away. If you need to talk through daily happenings and stressful situations, call someone you trust who’ll be able to boost your mood after an overwhelming day.
